How to layer lighting in your living room

A well-lit living room starts with how you use it.

A living room in the evening, lit by warm ceiling lights, a table lamp and a floor lamp, with a low fire feature along one wall.

Your living room might be a place to read, entertain, watch a film or relax after a long day. One ceiling light can make the room visible, but a few well-placed light sources give you more control over how it feels.

Layering lighting means combining general light, focused light and decorative light. You don’t need to change everything at once. Start with the spot that feels least comfortable and work from there.

Start with the room’s general light

Ambient lighting provides the overall light in a room. This might come from a ceiling fitting, several lamps or a combination of both.

Look at your room in the evening. Are some areas much brighter than others? Does the ceiling light feel harsh when you sit down? A shaded lamp can add another source of light, letting you choose a gentler setup when you don’t need the whole room brightly lit.

Give activities their own light

Task lighting helps with a specific activity, such as reading or working on a hobby.

Place a reading lamp beside your favourite chair so the light falls onto the page. Adjust its position until you can see comfortably without looking directly at the bulb. For shared rooms, a dedicated lamp also lets one person read while someone else watches television.

Highlight something you enjoy

Accent lighting draws attention to a feature: a bookshelf, a piece of artwork or an interesting corner.

Try a small lamp on a sideboard or a suitable decorative light beside a display. The aim is to create a focal point. You don’t need to illuminate every object in the room.

Choose your evening setup

Once you have a few light sources, experiment with combinations:

  • Reading: general light with a focused lamp beside your seat.
  • Having friends over: several lamps spread around the room.
  • Watching a film: a soft background light positioned to avoid reflections on the screen.

Keep cords clear of walkways and follow each product’s placement instructions. A room that looks inviting should also be easy to move around.
