Small bedroom, better lighting

Make a compact bedroom comfortable from the first alarm to the last page.

In a small bedroom, every surface has a job. Your bedside table might hold a book, a glass of water and your phone, leaving little room for a large lamp.

Thoughtful lighting can support your routine without making the room feel crowded. Start by deciding where you need useful light and where you’d prefer a softer atmosphere.

Keep bedside lighting in proportion

Choose a lamp that leaves enough space for the things you reach for at night. A compact base can be useful on a narrow table.

A clip-on reading light may suit some bed frames or shelves, provided the product is designed for that mounting position and attaches securely. Check that it won’t interfere with drawers, bedding or anything you need to move.

Light your reading spot

If you read in bed, position the light so it reaches the page without shining into your eyes. An adjustable head can help you direct it where you need it.

In a shared bedroom, test the angle from both sides of the bed. A focused beam is more useful when it lights your book without lighting your partner’s face.

Create a softer evening setting

A bedside or dresser lamp gives you an alternative to the main ceiling light when you’re getting ready to wind down.

If your light supports dimming, try a lower setting for quiet time and a brighter one for getting dressed or finding things. Check the product instructions before pairing a bulb with a dimmer.

Think about reflections

Mirrors can reflect a lamp’s light, but placement matters. Check the view from your bed: if you can see a bright exposed bulb in the mirror, try moving or angling the lamp.

The same applies to screens and glossy furniture. A small adjustment can remove an uncomfortable reflection.

Keep the layout simple

You don’t need lights on every surface. A useful starting point is general room lighting and one well-placed bedside light.

Keep lamps away from bedding and curtains as directed by the manufacturer, and arrange cords so they don’t cross your route to the door.
